Ultimate Guide to Caring for Stone Worktops

How to care for granite, quartz, marble and quartzite worktops

We want your stone worktops to look great and perform well for many years.

All customers are provided with clear care guidance, and a care kit if required. If you ever have questions about cleaning, maintenance or day-to-day use, you’re always welcome to get in touch.

If any issues arise, we’ll do our best to resolve them quickly and professionally.

In rare cases, we can return to reseal surfaces or carry out a revitalising deep clean at a minimal cost. This is seldom required due to the durability and long-lasting nature of the materials we install.

Caring for Polished Granite Worktops

  • Clean regularly with a damp cloth

  • Dry surfaces to prevent dull patches from water or soap residue

  • A mild neutral (pH7) detergent can be used

  • Drainer grooves can be cleaned using 000 grade, non-oiled wire wool

  • Avoid abrasive cleaners or scouring pads

  • Glass or stainless-steel cloths help leave a smear-free finish

  • Household spray polishes such as Mr Sheen or Pledge can be used occasionally

Good practice:

  • Always use a chopping board

  • Avoid placing very hot items directly on the surface

  • Take care around edges to prevent chipping

Granite and marble are natural materials and are slightly porous, even when polished.
Surfaces are sealed before installation to help resist staining, but spills should still be wiped up promptly, particularly acidic or oil-based products.

Caring for Honed Granite Worktops

Honed granite has a softer, matt finish and requires a little more care than polished surfaces.

  • Clean with a damp cloth and dry after use

  • Use a mild neutral (pH7) detergent only

  • Avoid abrasive cleaners or scouring pads

  • Glass or stainless-steel cloths work well for daily cleaning

Because honing reduces the surface seal slightly:

Caring for Marble Worktops

Marble is a beautiful natural stone but requires more care than granite or quartz.

  • Clean regularly with a damp cloth

  • Dry surfaces after cleaning

  • Use only mild, neutral cleaners

  • Avoid acidic cleaners, including vinegar or lemon-based products

  • Avoid abrasive pads or powders

Good practice:

  • Marble is porous and can stain or etch if spills are left

  • Wipe up liquids immediately, especially wine, citrus, oils and perfumes

  • Always use chopping boards and coasters

  • Avoid placing hot items directly on the surface

  • Take care around edges to avoid chips

Marble worktops are sealed before installation, but ongoing care is essential to keep them looking their best.

Caring for Quartz Worktops (Including Caesarstone)

Quartz is an engineered stone and is virtually non-porous, making it very low maintenance.

  • Clean regularly with a damp cloth

  • Dry surfaces to avoid water marks

  • Use a mild neutral detergent

  • For stubborn marks, a cream cleaner such as Astonish can be used

  • Avoid abrasive cleaners or scouring pads

  • Use glass or stainless-steel cloths for a smear-free finish

Good practice:

  • Always use a chopping board

  • Avoid placing very hot items directly on the surface

  • Take care around edges to prevent chipping

Although quartz resists staining well, spills from oils, wine and strongly coloured foods should still be wiped away promptly.

Caring for Stone Kitchen Worktops

What to Avoid (All Stone Types)

  • Abrasive cleaners or scouring pads

  • Strong acids or chemicals

  • Oven cleaner, paint stripper, nail varnish remover or degreasers

  • Moving worktops after installation
